There are places in life that feel familiar the moment you walk in, not because of the building itself, but because of the people behind it. That is how Charlie’s Banquet Hall & Pub feels for me, especially knowing the owners as long as I have. Before Charlie’s was ever a dream or a business, Dan and Ashley Ernst were friends I spent some of my best years with. Between the ages of 19 and 21, I was over at their place more times than I can count, laughing, joking, and figuring out life together in the way only young adults can.
Back then, they used to call me Jesus, and they leaned into the joke in the funniest way. One time they even threw an “I’m With Jesus” party. We all went to Walmart and grabbed these gray t shirts that already had “I’m With Jesus” printed on them. It was simple, goofy, and perfect. I remember looking around the room at all my friends in those matching shirts and feeling like I was part of something special. It was not about money or big plans. It was about the moment, the people, and how much we cared about each other.
Fast forward to 2020, when Dan and Ashley bought the 4,300 square foot space now known as Charlie’s Banquet Hall & Pub. They took over a place with history and turned it into something that reflects who they are. It is not just a bar. It is a place where people gather for weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, fundraisers, and community celebrations. It is a spot that keeps leagues going strong, where you can shoot pool, throw darts, play cornhole, or jump into a tournament if you are feeling competitive. It is a true community hub with life happening in every corner.
I am truly proud of both of them for everything they have done and everything they continue to do. Owning and growing a place like Charlie’s takes heart, sweat, and a whole lot of love, and that is what they bring every day. Watching them go from gray Walmart shirt parties to creating a welcoming gathering place that means so much to North Fond du Lac has been incredible. I am grateful to call them friends, and I am proud of the home they have built for so many people to laugh, celebrate, and make memories in.
